How ancient wisdom, migratory sardines, and the ghost of a failed startup forged a new map for belonging in a world without borders.
What This Book Is — And What It Is Not
Not a travel guide. No lists of coworking spaces, no breakdowns of visa categories, no best cafés for laptops.
Not a productivity manual. The frameworks in Algorithmic Sardines are philosophies, not processes. They ask why, not how.
A memoir. The story of a boy from Morocco’s oldest city who spent two decades crossing the Mediterranean — from the cybercafés of Meknès to the trade show floors of Barcelona, from the olive groves of the Jbala mountains to a rented terrace in Málaga.
A manifesto. The book that gave birth to Rooted Nomadism. Every framework published on this blog — Zellige Blueprint, Olive Grove Economy, Morisco Compass, Algorithmic Sardine — was first articulated here, in long form, grounded in a single story.
Both. Memoir and philosophy. Personal and universal. A single life and a shared condition.

A First Page
From Chapter 1 — The Two-Tile Mosaic:
“Chincla,” I said, my six-year-old voice a whisper in the bustling Meknès market. I was asking for the leather sandals my mother called by their Spanish name — a word that carried the sea-breeze of the North in its crisp sound. The shopkeeper, a kind migrant from Morocco’s sun-scorched south, scratched his beard, his brow furrowed in confusion. “Sandala?” he ventured, trying the more common Arabic term.
In that brief, silent chasm between his world and mine, I learned my first lesson in geography: I was a foreigner in my own neighborhood. My childhood was a mosaic, crafted from two tiles that never quite aligned.

Why This Book Exists
I did not set out to write a book. I set out to survive a year.
It was 2020. The borders had closed. My business — fifteen years of work — had evaporated in a week. I was sitting in my parents’ house in Ksar El-Kébir, surrounded by their absence, staring at a laptop screen that no longer made sense.
The words that came out of that silence were not a plan. They were a reckoning. They were my attempt to make sense of what had happened to me — and to the millions of people who had built lives on the assumption that movement was always possible.
Algorithmic Sardines is the result. It is the most honest thing I have written.
